A SHORT COMPARISON BETWEEN THE MORMON
AND THE BIBLICAL GODS
THE MORMON GOD
Mormons worship a deity who is only one of a great many Gods
throughout the universe, each ruling their own planet. However, the
only God with whom they have to do is their own deity called Elohim,
who was also their biological father in a previous spiritual
existence.
Their teaching is that mankind and God are one and the same species,
the only difference between us being that God has progressed further
than we have at this specific moment in time. They say that deity and
man both began in exactly the same way as intelligent matter, then
progressed to the form of spirit beings by being born to an already
existing God and his wife. The next step in eternal progression was
to be born to another set of parents on an earthly planet, in order
to take on bodies of flesh and bone.
The LDS God, Elohim, was also once a fallen sinner, just like you and
me. He followed the Mormon way of earning his right to the forgiveness
of his own sins through obedience to the laws and ordinances of the
LDS church, plus virtuous living. He also went through polygamous
marriages in an LDS temple, as this is one of the requirements of LDS
godhood. Then he progressed one step further and gained the requisite
amount of knowledge needed in order to earn the right to be
"translated" (a Mormon term denoting progression to godhood
and eternal life).
Unlike the God of the Bible, Elohim has a body of flesh and bone,
which limits him in that he can only be in one place at a time.
Because the universe was already in existence before Elohim became a
spirit being, he had nothing to do with its creation. So he not vital,
or even necessary to it, but is subject to it in the same way that we
are.
THE BIBLICAL GOD
The biblical God is the eternal, self-existing First Cause. He created
and sustains the universe and all that is in it, so everyone and
everything that exists is subject to Him. Moreover He is unique in
that He is, always has been and always will be the only God in existence.
This means that He reigns supreme over all. (The Bible teaches that all
other so-called gods are false gods, and behind every false god or idol
stands that great deceiver, Satan.)
Because He is spirit, the biblical God's presence permeates the entire
universe. So there is nothing He does not see or know. He has no
limitations as His abilities are infinite. He is eternally unchanging,
immortal and omnipotent, and unlike the Mormon God He never had to progress
in any way. And as He has never, ever sinned, He didn't ever need salvation
or forgiveness. In other words, the biblical God is, always has been, and
always will be, far superior to mankind in every conceivable way.
The Bible teaches that both mankind and the angelic beings were created by
God, and not fathered by Him biologically as Mormons are led to believe
they were.
